Sea Freight or Air Freight: Choosing the Best Option for Your Cargo

Choosing between sea and air freight comes down to three things: speed, cost, and the type of cargo. For most shippers moving goods between the United States and Europe, the right answer changes from one order to the next. A product launch with a hard date needs a different plan than a regular restock of heavy goods. Here is a simple way to decide, with the trade-offs on each side.
When air freight makes sense
Large or heavy shipments: a full container costs far less per unit than air freight, which makes sea the default for furniture, machinery, and bulk stock.
Planned, non-urgent orders: if you can book four to six weeks ahead, sea freight gives you the lowest cost per unit and a predictable monthly schedule.
Our advice
Many of our clients use both: air for urgent restocks and launches, and sea for regular bulk orders. Customs rules also differ between the US and the EU, so we plan the paperwork before your cargo moves.
